Early version: Stereo Compensator
The device was made by Mc Intosh Lab. in 1959 and named Stereo Compensator, as the previous models. [see note below]
Front panel in golden brass, trimmed horizontally in two parts by a stick of the same metal. Green writing on the black glass. Red backlight when the unit is working.
From left to right (upper level): Mode Selector (Rev/Stereo/Left ch./Right Ch./Mono Left Ch./Mono Right Ch. – Balance – Phase (0-180°) – HF Cut-off filter (Flat/9kC/5kC) – Aural comp. [Loudness] -Power/ Volume.. Lower level: Inputs (Aux/Tape2/Tape1/Tuner/Phono1 Stereo /Phono 1 Mono/ Phono 2 Stereo/Mono/Tape HD 1/Tape HD 2 – Record Compensator for Bass (0/ 300/ 400/ RIAA/ LP/ Tape) – Record compensator for Treble (Tape/ -5/-10/-12/RIAA/LP) – Bass control – Treble control – Rumble filter – Tape Jack – Tape compare.

“1959 : This year McIntosh introduced the C20 preamplifier. A black & white photo does not do justice to the red illuminated dial pointers. I first saw the C20 when I was working at the United States Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory at Ft. Monmouth, New jersey. This preamp was used in a demonstration of a sound system to simulate sounds of tanks. A system was also developed to project sound from a helicopter a mile above the ground out of the range of small arms fire.”

L’apparecchio fu lanciato dalla Mc Intosh nel 1959 con il nome di Stereo Compensator, come del resto i modelli precedenti. [vedi nota sotto]
Pannello frontale in ottone color oro, diviso orizzontalmente in due da una riga dello stesso metallo. Scritte principali in verde, vetro nero, retroilluminazione in rosso quando l’unità è in funzione.

“1959 : Quest’anno McIntosh ha introdotto il preamplificatore C20. Una foto in bianco e nero non rende giustizia alle lancette del quadrante illuminate di rosso. Ho visto per la prima volta il C20 quando lavoravo presso il laboratorio di ricerca e sviluppo del segnale dell’esercito degli Stati Uniti a Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey. Questo preamplificatore è stato utilizzato in una dimostrazione di un sistema audio per simulare i suoni dei carri armati. THE MISTERY OF THE MARK: Fab. en E.U.
In all exemplars I always saw on the back panel at bottom right the writings:
STEREO COMPENSATOR Model C-20…. Made in USA, but in the lower line appears invariably the writing: Fab. en E.U., which in my opinion means: Fabriqué en Europe Unie in Fench language.
Despite many searches, I have been unable to find an explanation. Maybe McIntosh Lab. have been a plant in Europe?
And, if this is correct, where?
Moreover, you must remember that only in March 19,1958 was born the European Parliament.
If someone knows further information, please let me know.
IL MISTERO DELLA SCRITTA: Fab. en E.U.
In tutti gli esemplari di C20 che io ho visto, sul pannello posteriore in basso a destra compaiono sempre le seguenti diciture:
STEREO COMPENSATOR Model C-20…. Made in USA, ma nell’ultima riga in basso appare invariabilmente la scritta: Fab. en E.U. che a mio parere significa Fabriqué en Europe Unie in lingua francese.
Nonostante molte ricerche, non sono riuscito a trovare una spiegazione. Forse la McIntosh ha avuto una fabbrica anche in Europa? E se così fosse, dove?
Inoltre vale la pena di ricordare che la nascita del parlamento europeo avvenne solo il 19 Marzo, 1958.
Se qualcuno conosce la spiegazione o può fornire ulteriori particolari, per favore mi contatti.
