Martin Logan’s short history
MartinLogan (ML) is a Canadian/US company producing conventional subwoofer speakers as well as floor-standing, wall-mounted, and in-wall hybrid speakers using electrostatic loudspeaker and planar magnetic thin film loudspeaker technology.
Origins
The Company was founded by Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland who met in the late 1970s at a high-end audio store Sanders managed in Lawrence, Kansas. Although different backgrounds (Sanders had trained in architecture and advertising, Sutherland in electrical engineering) they shared a passion for music and electrostatic loudspeakers.
The first prototype
The first prototype was ready in 1980. Moreover, despite being adeguate the sound quality, at high volume levels there was arcing within the electrostatic panels.
The Monolith
By the time of the 1983 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), they had developed a full-range hybrid electrostatic loudspeaker they called “The Monolith”. Fortunately a high-end audio company used a prototype pair in its room at the show to demonstrate its electronics. Dealers who heard them were impressed by the sound of the Monoliths and were eager to sell them. It was at this point that Sanders and Sutherland put their middle names to the venture and set about satisfying the demand they had created. MartinLogan was created.

The CLS design
The CLS (Curvilinear Line Source) Panel has been the innovative concept firstly developed by Martin Logan in electrostatic design, applied in The Monolith and successively in all their electrostatic loudspeakers. In 1986 they released the CLS, the first full range electrostatic speaker. At the same time ML spent a lot of energy in study and design of increasingly efficient transducers.
Late models
Around 1985, they introduced on the market the Monolith I. In 1987 they released the Sequel, a smaller hybrid speaker. During the Nineties were made new products, like the Quest, Aerius, SL3 and the Monolith II. The latest model, still in production, is the Monolith III/MonitorIII.
Monolith’s Design
All Monolith versions are based on the coupling of electrostatic section for mid-high frequencies with an electrodynamic woofer for low frequencies, below 100 Hz [Hybrid system]. The mid-high speaker consists of two horizontally curved and drilled steel panels and among them a very thin mylar curved diaphragm that drives the medium-high frequencies.

Modelli successivi

The Monolith
It was the first hybrid electrostatic loudspeaker made by Martin Logan, introduced on market in 1983. The speaker came with light wooden frame and black cabinet backwards, with blue cloth covering both mid-high and woofer section. A LED inserted on the front lights up when the speaker is powered up.
Electrostatic section: Mid-High Frequencies
It is made up of two horizontally curved steel panels, honeycomb perforated and coated by a conductive slurry hand applied. Among them a very thin and curved membrane. Moreover, to increrase the listening area, Martin Logan used as membrane an ultra-low mass mylar sheet, to launch a 30° controlled cylindrical wave front.
Electrodynamic section: low frequencies (below 100 Hz)
12″ woofer (cone type) having high excursion, super light and high rigidity. Furthermore, the moving coil driver consists of over 20 lbs. of large gauge and high purity copper wire.
Sezione Elettrostatica: Frequenze medio-alte
Warning : Not intended for biamp operation neither for biwiring.
Attenzione: Non utilizzabile in configurazione biamping nè biwiring.
The Monolith Specifications
Monolith I
Released by ML around 1985. It looks very close to the previous model. However, the electrostatic section may come with or without blue cloth covering, while the woofer section is always covered by a detachable grill. “For deep bass, a high power, multiple laminate coil polypropylene cone subwoofer is incorporated, which has individual power handling capacity of over 200 watts… The curvilinear electrostatic panel, fabricated from specifically-tooled, high-grade carbon steel, then coated with high dielectric Delrin based polymer. Applied via a proprietary electrostatic deposition process, it houses a membrane .0005 of an inch thick. Ruggedly constructed and insulated, as much as 300 watts of continuos power has driven the Monolith’s energized diaphragm (as well as our own ears’ diaphragms) into massive excursions with no deleterious effects.” [from the Owner’s manual] The panels are segmented into horizontal strips by spacers, to force the diaphragm to follow their own curvature.
No bi-wiring operation
“The Monolith I (and II) are not designed to be bi-wired. If you attempt to bi-wire the speaker with the HI and LOW inputs, you will be by-passing the internal crossover. This could do serious damage to the electrostatic panel interface device, as it is not designed for such operation.” [from the Owner’s Manual]
Bi-amp operation
Bi-amplification viceversa is allowed, using an external electronic crossover.[Crossover at 75 to 125 Hz, 6 dB/Octave or faster slope]
Augmented Bass
“If additional bass is desired [in case of room defects] the specifically designed Martin Logan Subwoofer incorparates two voice coils. By connecting the second coil set to the 1.th terminal set, an additional 3 dB of energy can be obtained below 100 Hz” [from the Owner’s manual]
Funzionamento a doppia amplificazione (Bi-amping)
Monolith II
Introduced at the end of 80’s or in early 90’s, it looks very close to the previous Monolith I, except for the cloth-covering lack. Power supply 120/240V. Unfortunately, no more data available, because I was unable to find its own manual or any further information. Indeed Martin Logan released only a single manual for both Monolith I and II.
A very interesting forum:“Monolith I or Monolith II ?” edited by the Martin Logan Owners published the picture of its speaker inputs and biamping schematics too.
Alimentazione a 120 o 240V.
Un forum molto interessante “Monolith I or Monolith II ?”
Monolith III
Introduced in 1991 or so. While looks similar to the previous model, it represents a noticeable evolution in exterior and internal design. The cabinet consists of “hardwood powderboard and is finished with a durable and attractive leathorette.” No grill on the electrostatic panel. The woofer box is coated by a simil-leather, except for the central front, which contains the driver, covered by a snap-on grille frame.
Electrostatic Section
“The curvilinear electrostatic panel(s) manufactured and used by Martin-Logan has proven itself to be one of the most durable and reliable transducers available today. Fabricated from a specially tooled, high grade steel, the panel is the coated with a special high dielectric nylon/Delrin based polymer that is applied via a proprietary electrostatic deposition process. This panel assembly houses a membrane 0.0005 of an inch thick. Ruggedly constructed and insulated, as much as 200 watts of continuos power has driven the Monolith III’s energized diaphragm into massive excusions with no deleterious effects” [from the owner’s manual]
Electrodynamic component
12″ cone woofer, sealed in its box.
Warning
The speaker is designed for passive or active crossover configuration. Standard connection too requires any case the crossover. Available on request by the Company:
Monolith III with wooden frame?
There are some units, coming still with wooden frame. I believe they represent transition example between Monolith II and Monolith III.
Speaker Input Look
In the following pics two different speaker input design. I believe that the first is the earlier.
Monolith III Specifications
Monolith III/Monitor III
You may find some exemplars indistinguishable from the Monolith IIIs, except for the writing that appears on the speaker input: THE MONITOR III. Unfortunately, no information available. I believe they represents a sub-version. The Monitor IIIs came with their own active crossover, called Monitor IIIx.
