TRANSCRIPTION TURNTABLE
The term “transcription turntable” should be reserved for the turntables made for playing records at 16 2/3 rpm speed, used in 1940’s and 1950’s in radio stations and named transcription records. Nevertheless it is applied also to tables that play multiple speeds (78,45,33 rpm).
The Garrard 301, manufactured by the Garrard Engineering and Manufacturing Company Ltd of Swindon (G.B.), was introduced in 1954. The model stayed in production until to 1970’s.
IDLER DRIVE AND IDLER WHEEL SYSTEM
Garrard used the idler drive system (the alternating current motor is engaged to an intermediate, the idler wheel, to rotate the platter). This system ensures must speed accuracy and good wow/flutter specifications. The 301 supports the 33,45 and 78 rpm commercial formats.
GREASE BEARING AND OIL BEARING
The first version had a grease lubricated spindle and looks hammerite painted. [Hammerite® is a protective compound against rusty and metal imperfection, painted onto surface]. Afterwards they introduced a new version, recognizable for color (cream/ivory paint grease based). Successively they changed the spindle lubrification from grease to oil, keeping the same cream/ivory color and later the color too which became close to white.
The early Hammerite version (commonly named gray hammertone) has the schedule number 51400/1
The next versions have a new schedule number : 51400/2
IDLER DRIVE E IDLER WHEEL: SIGNIFICATO
GREASE BEARING E OIL BEARING
From left to right: Power – Fine speed setting – Speed selector (33/45/78 rpm)
The schedule number is 51400/2. This one number is used to identify the version (oil bearing) and should not be confused with the serial number.
Early version: grease bearing
The bearing has a brass grease resevoir on the side covered by a knurled cap. Turning the knurled cap you may introduce a charge of grease into the bearing apparatus.
Late version: oil bearing
In the late oil bearing version the side reservoir disappeared because the bearing did not need normally further lubrification.
Once removed the plate, you may see the metal plate containing the serial number.
50 or 60 Hz Pulley
Garrard provided two different pulleys, each of which must be used according to frequency of the user’s domestic power supply (50 or 60 Hz). The 50 Herz pulley was built in nickel, the 60 Hz in brass. The prolonged pressure between the rubber wheel and the pulley causes over the time a deformation of the former. So, the speed of the platter loses its uniformity. Therefore, it is needed its periodic replacement.
According to Chunny Bhamra, Author of Gramophone Museum web-site (see the link below), the units for the 60 Hz market have an uppercase A following the schedule number, as shown in the picture on right. This one figure takes up the rectangular space normally empty, which in early version is gray (like the writings) and in late version is black.
White version
The white version is the last. The schedule number remains the same: 51400/2.
La versione bianca è l’ultima. Il numero di costruzione resta lo stesso: 51400/2
Strobe version
The strobe sided plate was offered in the last production years as optional, for 50 or 60 Hz both.
