ESB ultrashort history

ESB is an Italian company, officially founded in 1972 but entered the high fidelity and electro-acoustic sector since 1969, thanks to the design and sale of the 240L loudspeaker. This one was planned by Vincenzo Biasella, who would become the ESB’s founder.

ESB 240L

In a market at that time dominated by American brands, the 240L, whose production was initially only handcrafted, soon managed to gain the audiophile attention not only in Italy but also abroad. The 240L was a large speaker, consisting of a 45cm woofer and nine mid-high frequency drivers. It turned out to be a speaker of remarkable acoustic quality, especially for jazz but also for classical music.

ESB 240L

Vincenzo Biasella e Renato Giussani

Thanks to the intuitions of Vincenzo Biasella and Renato Giussani, ESB’s chief engineer since the end of 1979, the design and construction of the UMA (Medium-High Unit) was born. UMA  upset  canonical concepts about acoustic phase and arrangement of the medium and high units in the loudspeaker.

Conventional Speaker’s Phase

Up to this point, the main focus had been on phasing the various drivers by aligning them on the panels. Thereby, their acoustic centers were equidistant from the listening position but not necessarily aligned with the vertical. In other words, a perfect phase response was considered essential for all frequencies. Subsequent research has shown that the human ear is unable to perceive phase shifts of even more than a millisecond for low frequencies and within a few tenths of a second for medium-high frequencies. On the other hand, even the slightest displacement of the listener, with respect to the position foreseen by the speaker designer, inevitably leads to even more accentuated phase shifts.

Phase at frequencies close to crossover ones

Therefore, much more important is the control of the phase at frequencies close to the crossover ones, not only on the axis of the loudspeaker but on the widest possible front. In fact, at crossover limit frequencies, both speakers work simultaneously. If the signals arrive out of phase or even in phase opposition to the two speakers, destructive interference will be produced, altering or even canceling the phase response for that frequency. To avoid this, the distance between the two acoustic centers must be as short as possible, or at least not greater than one third of the wavelength. In this case the drop in frequency response will be only 3 dB.

Example

The crossover frequency 5000, corresponding wavelength 6.8 cmBetter frequency response: distance between the two acoustic centers less than 2 cm. (frequency response loss -3dB)

Conclusions

Biasella and  Giussani conclude by saying:

1. Equidistance of speaker centers is not critical to the woofer and has only minimal effect on midrange and tweeter coupling. So it doesn’t make sense to have speakers on different floors.

2. The centers of the speakers reproducing mid-high frequencies should be aligned in a vertical line.

3. The position of the speakers reproducing mid-high frequencies must be asymmetrical with respect to the center line of the speaker.

4. The mid-high frequency speakers should be as close together as possible, in reference to the frequency with which they cross.

Vincenzo Biasella e Renato Giussani

In case of vertical alignment of two systems of a speaker and  spacing 18 cm from each other, if the listening point is located three meters away,  the response will be linear at any point in the space between ± 30 cm from the horizontal axis (see picture above). Under normal use, this makes speakers placement more critical and the listening will be correct for narrow emission front only.

Dal Catalogo ESB, 1975

If the crossover frequency between woofer and midrange is equal to 600 Hz, because one thirth of its waveleght is about 20 cm, will be easy to verify that, even in case of misalignment of their acoustic centers equal to ± 5 cm, if they are no more than 30 cm apart,  the frequency response over two meters will be linear in all environment. To optimize frequency response for mid-high cross frequencies too [in the text is written mid-low frequencies but it seems to me a writing mistake], the ESB designers placed in the loudspeaker 100 LD these two units as close as possible together. The distance between them has been reduced to 9 cm, forcing its assembly on a single one flange. This new ensemble, initially called 100 MTD (midrange tweeter dome), became later UMA (Unità Medio Alti), allows linear response in a 120 cm high front (see picture above). Therefore it was obtained an easier loudspeaker placement.
